How Thankfulness Can Help Kids Conquer Anxiety and Embrace Joy

It's hard to believe but thanksgiving is right around the corner, and in this season I love to help my family embrace thankfulness and gratitude in as many was as we can. Things have been tough in the world, and sometimes it is hard as a mom with anxiety to know how to help my kids not feel the same big feelings I do. But I can imagine a world where my children go to bed with hearts full of happiness and dreams full of possibilities - without a care in the world. A place where worry takes a back seat, and laughter steers the ship. In this world, gratitude is the shining star, and stress or anxiety? They're the villains we've sent packing. So, how can we make this world a reality for our kids? We introduce them to the magic of gratitude.

Gratitude is more than just saying "thank you." It's the incredible power of recognizing the good in our lives, no matter how big or small. It's the secret ingredient to happiness, and it's something we can easily serve up to our kids.

Anxiety in kids is like a sneaky monster, always lurking around. Gratitude becomes the superhero that keeps that monster at bay. When kids focus on what they're thankful for, it's like turning on a protective shield against anxiety. They start seeing the positives in life, and the "what-ifs" become a lot less daunting.  

Gratitude doesn't just change what kids see; it changes how they see themselves. When they recognize their achievements, big and small, they become more self-assured. Anxiety begins to shrink when faced with the confidence that comes from acknowledging their accomplishments.

So how do we cultivate this type of habit and life for our children? It's as simple as 1-2-3.

    Imagine a book filled with rainbows and sunshine that your kiddo can peek through when he is having a rough moment. Gratitude journals are the go-to tool for sparking joy in kids. They can fill these pages with all the things they're thankful for. It's a delightful way to end each day, and a great memory to have to look back on.

  2. Expressing Thanks:

    Encourage kids to say "thank you." Teach them that showing appreciation for others, whether it's their friends, parents, or coaches, is a superpower in itself. It not only brightens someone else's day but also fills their own hearts with positivity.

  3. Create a 'Thankful' Tradition:

    Make gratitude a daily habit. Ask your kids about their "three good things" each day. It's a game where they share three positive experiences. This practice shifts their focus toward the good stuff, leaving less room for anxious thoughts.

What are some other ways to bring thankfulness into our homes this season? Well, who said gratitude can't be fun? We can make this journey enjoyable for even our littlest ones:

  1. Gratitude Scavenger Hunt:

    Turn gratitude into an adventure! Create a list of things to be thankful for and send your kids on a scavenger hunt to find them. It's a fun way to explore the world with grateful eyes.

  2. Gratitude Art:

    Unleash the inner artist! Encourage kids to draw, paint, or craft things they're thankful for and give them as gifts during the holiday season. It's a creative outlet for gratitude expression.

  3. Thank You Notes to Self:

    Place a twist on "thank you" notes by having kids write appreciation letters to themselves. It's a powerful exercise in self-love.

With the magic of gratitude, kids are equipped to take on life's challenges with a brighter outlook. Anxiety doesn't stand a chance when confronted with a heart full of thanks. It's like handing kids a superhero cape and teaching them how to soar above their worries. Every day can be an adventure, and they're the fearless explorers. So, let's sprinkle some gratitude magic into their lives and watch them embrace the happiness they truly deserve and spread it to others. When kids learn to be thankful, they learn to be joyful, resilient, and so confident. It's a beautiful transformation, and it all begins with a simple "thank you."
